I've wondered what the difference was myself, though, and tried both connections (VGA and DVI) going from my laptop to my monitor. I didn't really see a difference. I know for a fact, though, that my monitor doesn't need to be adjusted (brightness, contrast, vertical & horizontal size and position) when connected to the DVI. The documentation said you can make those adjustments when connected through VGA, but they are not necessary over DVI because they are adjusted automatically. This may just be a feature of the monitor itself, though.
