To answer your question correctly, I don't want to plan on that which is why I don't want to do that L.A. date. We're looking for something in southern CA.

... do you mean northern Cali? Because I asked how long it took to get from Oakland (Bay Area) to Portland and was told it was about 10 hours. L.A. IS mid/southern CA and is about 6 hours south of Oakland.

SO, you're best bet is to start more north and work your way south.
