When we go to sleep, there's a switch in our brain that immobilizes our body. It is possible to consciously wake up before this switch is flipped back, leaving us aware but unable to move. This has happened to me many times.

yeah its a really shitty feeling, especially when you just woke up from a nightmare and are freaked out
