There was this guy on one episode of the Universe series who witnessed this explosion of a white dwarf where the size of the burst was something crazy like 30 times the size of our galaxy alone. That's one big fucking incomprehensibly-sized explosion. Needless to say, despite how utterly ridiculously far away it was, you could still see it with the naked eye.

Not that I'm doubting you, but is it at all possible that you meant "star system" and not "galaxy?" Unless I'm greatly misunderstanding the magnitude of a white dwarf explosion.
