MILTON, Mass. (AP) - A 9-year-old girl remained hospitalized
Sunday with stab wounds after her 23-year-old brother killed her
two sisters during a weekend birthday party, where police fatally
shot him to stop the attacks.
Authorities said 9-year-old Sarafina Revelus was expected to
survive and was with her parents, who were not home during
Saturday's attack at their Milford apartment.
Her 5-year-old sister Bianca and 17-year-old sister Samantha
died Saturday at the hands of their older brother, 23-year-old
Kerby Revelus, according to Milton police and the Norfolk District
Attorney's Office.
Milton Police Chief Richard G. Wells said officers responding to
Sarafina's 911 call broke down the door and found Revelus stabbing
her in an upstairs room shortly after 5 p.m.
Samantha was already dead nearby and Bianca, who was celebrating
her fifth birthday, had been decapitated by the time officers could
get inside to help the girls, authorities said.
The incident apparently started when Kerby Revelus had a dispute
with neighbors that turned into a family argument. Wells called the
scene "very horrific" and among the worst he had seen in his 25
years in law enforcement.
"His intent was clear," Wells said. "He was trying his best
to kill all of them."
Officers shot and killed Revelus, who had been released from
prison several months ago after serving time for a firearms
violation. The children's grandmother was doing laundry in the
basement, but information was not immediately available on whether
she was injured.
Sarafina remained hospitalized Sunday at Boston Medical Center
with stab wounds. Officers who witnessed the attacks and those
involved in Kerby Revelus' fatal shooting are receiving counseling,
Wells said.
Authorities have not said how many rounds were fired, but said
Kerby Revelus was still holding the knife when he was shot. Norfolk
District Attorney William J. Keating said officers tried to
resuscitate Samantha Revelus, but were unsuccessful.
Jocelyn Ashley, 18, who attended Milton High School with
Samantha Revelus, said Kerby Revelus was "a loner," but that
Samantha was friendly and excited about the prom.
Milton High School principal John Drottar said Revelus, a
senior, was a member of the poetry club and planned to attend
college this fall.
"She was a wonderful young lady, a great student, and just a
sweetheart of a kid," Drottar said.
Grief counseling was available Sunday afternoon at the school
and will be offered Monday to students and employees, he said.
