as far as mud is concerned...it's spring, and it's new england...you do the math. want less mudd? go early in the am when things aren't thawed out and flowing yet.

for great 'mellow-ish' places to check out:

monadnock: see lots of people on the way up :( but at least you get a bald summit with lots of exposure and decent elevation. they say this peak was the largest in the north east (far bigger that washington) until the last glacial period. receding glaciers tore off the peak at the amphitheater or 'false summit.' trails are not all the difficult i recommend parking at toll road and heading up.

big pine park: somewhere near the sandwich range. i wont tell you where exactly. park off the highway. right away you are greeted by enormous 500-600 year old, 'old growth' pines. it is AMAZING. through the canopy there is a very easy but moderate climb to the top or a small peak with a fire tower up top with amazing views of the sandwich range, the dome etc.
not many people know about this place!

mt. greylock: its kinda cool. its kinda gay. anytime i drove out here i always thought, man if i drove this far north i could be in much cooler shit.

for more moderate shit:

Chocurua is pretty cool and not all that demanding. It's amongst some cool shit too.

The whites are cool, but the best stuff is over in newry/bethel/sugarloaf/wrangely area imho.
