How did he sell out death metal exactly? By raising the bar and writing more technically proficient metal, as opposed to perpetually playing rudimentary death/thrash?
He tried to make death metal into heavy metal again. He wanted to reverse the flow of time and go backwards, not forwards. Even more, he was a relentless promotional whore, taking the place of better bands, and treated many of the people who got him to where he was like shit. .
Are we talking about Death here, or Control Denied? Comparing the riffs of later Death material to Heavy Metal is a stretch, haha. I don't hear Judas Priest when I listen to a song like Zero Tolerance. Vocally, he did try pulling a Halford on The Sound of Perseverance, I'll give you that (Painkiller cover obviously being a dead give away). As far as Atheist is concerned, Watchtower was making far more technical music than both Death or Atheist, in their earlier years. Both Human and Unquestionable Presence came out in 1991, I believe; both being their real breakthrough albums. Compared to early Death material, I will say that Piece of Time definitely contains more involved songwriting. It actually reminded me a lot of Sadus.
