I think the conflicting reports are from shitty journalists wanting to get their story out first.

One could speculate a lot of reasons for burning his house down. Scorched-earth policy - the house would have ended up being owned by the bank or the IRS... or maybe he just wanted to delete his life.

I doubt he owned the plane. But how did he know how to fly it? Reading enough technical manuals for a small plane and maybe a lesson or two is all you need if you're going to fly a suicide mission.

All we can tell about family from the suicide note is that he went through a divorce but it seems like he just brushed that off.
