The mystery of the two eternities of microcosm and macrocosm which meet in the human psyche is closely related to what Jung in his later works came to call synchronicity, a concept with more extensive implications than is commonly assumed. There was a time when the principle of causality was regarded as absolutely valid in scientific thought and the possibility of an acausal principle connecting events in time would have appeared a total impossibility. As long as the operational sphere of scientific endeavors was largely restricted to the earth, or at most to the solar system, the causality principle was not seriously challenged.
