What a piece of garbage this song is. After initially hating Death Magnetic (like all rational folk), I'd eventually heard bits and pieces of things that sort of reminded me of Puppets and gave me a sliver of hope that there was something left here worth salvaging. The End of the Line, however, smashes that hope and befouls the corpse. This POS drives it home that Metallica no longer has any idea how to write a song. It sounds less like the ruthless machine that gave us Damage Inc. and more like a band that routinely kicks ass at high school battles of the band. Like an improv garage band, bouncing from one half-explored idea fragment to the next, it's pure riff salad - the sound of a band adrift in the studio, artistically bankrupt, bereft of meaning and without merit. D+
