It was the idea that you could be tough (still having a heavy sound), and sensative (with psuedo-poetic lyrics, clean parts, and feminine in appearance). The end result was really just a mold for a prototypical "metalcore" band that everyone would follow, and that was never really any good to begin with. how emo got mixed into hardcore in the first place is beyond me.
