I think alot of the bands that started these unfortunate trends (18 visions, skycamefalling) were really just closet metal kids, trying to grab onto the rising trend of emo being incorporated into hardcore, looking for a marketable image and sound. It was the idea that you could be tough (still having a heavy sound), and sensative (with psuedo-poetic lyrics, clean parts, and feminine in appearance). The end result was really just a mold for a prototypical "metalcore" band that everyone would follow, and that was never really any good to begin with.

how emo got mixed into hardcore in the first place is beyond me.
