The fungus limits a certain species from having the upper hand in the eco-system -- I can think of one particular species that needs some limiting. Either it exists, or upon discovery, some scientist somewhere studying genetic engineering or other sorts of biological experiments is probably out there trying to make a synthetic version of this fungi that will target humans, making the need to discover a natural host irrelevant. Nonetheless, I agree, we could use some limiting.
