Agreed. I sincerely think our education system needs a serious reform. It's something a mandatory test won't fix. We need to redesign what we learn, and at what age. Sadly, I think history is usually not seen as "important" as say, mathematics or biology. But from history, we can learn more about ourselves and as you said, what fails and what works.
It just seems that they aren't being taught the whole picture.
