What you are thinking about is the SVX, that queer car with the cigarette windows and the much-too-heavy chassis. The WRX was released here in 2002 and has since become (imho) the pinnacle of bang for your buck performance. Actually, I'm currently in discussions with some other Subaru buffs to swap my 2.5 h4 with either a 2.7 h4 or a used 3.0 h6.
