...And for once, an anonymous person actually has something intelligent to say. Body Integrity Identity Disorder does exist. It's not listed in the most recent version of the DSM (the book that describes all psychological disorders and how to diagnose them) because the disorder hasn't been significantly researched until recently, but it should be added to the next one.
There is some debate regarding how to treat people with BIID. Basically, there are two options: (1) Use therapy to find out why they want to amputate one of their limbs, resolve whatever issues exist, and hope that they will no longer possess a desire to have their arm/leg/etc chopped off, or (2) Find a doctor who will violate the hippocratic oath, perform an unnecessary amputation, and hope that the person is happy enough with the results that they don't want any other body parts removed. |
