yeah if you guys are into nu-metal, then you'll love proteus. non of us have long flowing hair, and we wear expensive clothing. are lyrics arent brutal, are name isnt brutal, in fact with today's definition of brutal, we are probably quite the opposit. We're musicans, we're artist, and we express whatever is on our mind.

Wtf is that supposed to mean? If death metal is so out of date, why are there a few hundred death metal bands around today who have been succesful on an international scale?
Best not to insult peoples' tastes if you want them to go to your show.
I'm off to listen to some death metal from 400 years ago!
whoa...
we happen to live in the most egostical music scene in the US...if you dont sound like a certain way, then you get no shows, and people dont show up. no where in there did i insult anyones musical taste. just stating that if you happen to listen to immolation or terrorizor on a daily basis, then this show is not for you.
we've taken alot of criticism for our music cause we dont play "conventional" death metal.
and IF my intentions were to insult anyone, it would be towards the kids who cant get past gore, and sex, and stabbing and all the cliche 1776 death metal bullshit.
some of its cool, but its not us, and if you're into that, this show is not for you
take care |
then at the same time tons of people hate "conventional" death metal. jamspace shows are fun as hell. |
8 bucks for a show at a practice space?
you trying to pay rent? |
not as fun as the show @ the qvcc *cheesy thumbs up* |
"cliche 1776 death metal"
I still don't undserstand this statement |

I appreciate your attempt to 'explain' your statement, but you've just put your foot so much further up your mouth that you are shitting Nike.
Since when are YOU the omniscient being that knows the be all and end all of a person's tastes? Are you basically trying to say that someone who listens to Immolation (a far more talented, technical and modern band than yours, btw, I just compared your music to 'Harnessing Ruin') must have a SPECIFIC taste only? Are you God? Hogwash.
As for 'the most egotistical music scene in the US', are you fucking kidding me? Have you spent years living in every metropolitan music scene in the US? Where did you develop this expertise in your (I'm guessing) short lifespan, and do you have documentaion to prove your hypothesis?
There are an overwhelming majority of bands in our area who 'don't sound a certain way', as many as there are genres of music. Most of them get shows where they can. There is CERTAINLY no surplus of 'death metal' shows, so I re-iterate my original response "wtf are you talking about?"
(if you ARE God, then disregard this post, and I have a lot of additional questions for you) |

thats not true at all
you can clump a lot of bands in this area that sound exactly the same.
You can say that in ANY area....I could even say that the original poster's band sounds like other bands that are trendy. (I'm not putting down the band btw).
But we have a pretty wide array here. We got everything from Dresden Dolls and Doomriders to Watchmaker, black metal, thrash metal, metalcore, grind, etc, etc. |
he makes a great point.
Proteus plays a different style of death metal and it is a breath of fresh air from bands that sound like Immolation etc.
Not they are bad, its just old and fair less technical. Now I am not saying Immolation sucks. Old Death Metal is exactly what it is, OLD.
Some people jock bands that have been around for decades. |
And refuse to listen to newer stuff, thus dampering the local scene. |
A good example of this was that argument of the name "Au Pair"...I mean I like metal just as anybody else but some people that post on this board listen to nothing but stuff that is old and its kind of annoying |
I actually agree with those statements. I've been listening to metal for close to three decades, but I listen to old and new styles and bands in balance, and I sometimes also feel that people don't give new stuff a chance.
Wait a second though, Immolation still puts out records, and some of what they do is quite technical....are we talking about the same Immolation? |
Tell me there will be under age girls there drinking and I will go.
Even if there will not be under age girls there drinking, tell me there will be. |

No no, what im trying to say is that...even though they still put out records and are artists they still play the same style of death metal and will always stick to that kind of metal.
I am not putting them down or anything, or you for that fact. I am sure there are more bands that incorporate ISIS-style sludge metal into their sound, I haven't heard anyone quite do it like Proteus.
There are many, many bands doing that right now. And being signed for it.
Mare, Cult of Luna, Tides, Year of No Light, etc, I just downloaded about a dozen of these bands last week to check them out. I like some of them but nothing yet that can beat Neurosis, Pelican, or Mouth of the Architect. |
Now I'm totally confused, I just listened to the Proteus MySpace and it sounds like Cannibal Corpse, same chug chug to blast and Cannibal Corpse (and Immolation for that matter) squeals that they did a decade ago and more. Maybe this isn't like their other songs, or I have the wrong Proteus. |
the third band is actually called '+1 TBA'. |

i'd say immolation have a lot of technicality, but it's a different kind of technicality than what proteus does. proteus have technicality in terms of structure, time, theme, and overall space of the music, as well as some of the riffs, as if malignancy and isis had a steamy one-night stand and birthed a large bastard lovechild. immolation have a lot of technicality within the riffs, drumbeats, and sometimes vocal patterns and lyrics. see "christ's cage christ," and you'll see what i'm talking about at least with the vocal/lyrical stuff. it's like comparing apples and oranges realistically.

i dont know who these people are but i love you |

Oh yeah, I agree with you. They are two different bands and two different "types" of death metal. All I am saying is that there are people who ruin the scene by listening to one "type" of death metal and will completely dismiss anything before listening to it. There are lots of these people, and that creates a scene where if you dont sound like one band you cannot get shows because of people's ignorance.
A good example is Devourment, these guys have been playing slammy death metal and some people just can not get over old school DM and accept stuff like that.
Oh well.
It seems that metal or music in general can not evolve if people are stuck on one style, that is my only gripe. |
Well there will always be bands having fun playing the style of music they like. It is just too bad that the world is saturated with it. You can buy piles of cd's that basically say only one thing in particular. It is just too bad that the cream doesn't always rise to the top.
The TBA band should be MTR :-) |
ok im the guitarist for proteus so far I wrote the riffs and uh I actually happen to enjoy terrorizer and older immolation quite a bit. Old school death metal is amazing, old maleviolent creation , demilich big influences on me. Although I do enjoy cannibal corpse I dont quite see where you are coming from with that statement. Ill take devourment for example yeah they are slammy death metal but obviously they take influence from older bands too ( SUFFOCATION). I do believe however that sometimes stigmas are put on death metal. Like you have to be this way to be brutal. Personally I dont care what anyone thinks about proteus, you like it you like it you dont you dont. |

naw dude, there is a brand new venue built downstairs
