So 3 months after i sent my $1000 deposit,it's finally under way...

This is the piece of walnut for the 1-piece body.

It's being built for me by BEE basses, out of oregon.

Specs: Walnut body and headstock, figured maple neck fretboard and pickup cover, bee pre-amp,15mm spacing @ bridge,34-inch scale neck, and all black hardware.

It's going to be a 9-string and the tuning will be from low to high(f#,b,e,a,d,c,f,b-flat).

I'll post new pics as i get em.

Well i don't "need" 9-strings, but i just like having the highend, since i played guitar over 20years before i even started bass.

I've had my 7-string for a while now and i've been learning how to tap alot of 2 part harmony's and stuff....it's just fun.

I talked to a few other guys that have 9-string bee's,and they said the necks are thin and play like butter. One of them plays a conklin gt-7(just like the one i have now),and he says his bee-9 is alot easier to play.

As far as the tuning goes, some guys have it set up like you said(guitar style),but i think thats more for chording. Most of the time though they are tuned in fifths.

You would come up with sick chord harmonies.. And two part melodys.. or... Lay out the chords and line it up with your own melody. Alot of people like that upper register for that kind of thing. One of those things a bass player doesn't get the chance to do right away because of the 4 banger limits. Also... Soloing on some progressions would be fun as well as all that other shit.

this wood is beautiful:

holy shit you suck. im not ever going to play a 9 string (i wouldnt know what to do with it and i have no interest in doing so) but im really sure if some one is dropping like 3k for a custom 9 string bass, chances are that he/she can and will play that thing to its full potential. bass is a wonderful instrument where you can do it all: melody, rhythm, harmonizing, dual melodies/harmonies, percussion, etc etc... the more strings there are, the more useful it can be and more opportunities to expand upon the sound is created.

watch out guitar players... bassists might take some of your positions soon ;)

toggletoggle post by blue  at Jun 9,2007 2:50pm
it allows for a longer scale on the lower strings, which works wonders for keeping the string tension proper when you're tuned that low.

They are called 'fanned' frets. It improves string tension, intonation, etc. You see it on Novax(sp?) guitars and basses. and it's sortof like what they try to do with the buzz feitin and earvanna system

It adjusts the scale length of each string individually and each string has a differen't 'interuption point' from the frets. If you look inside a piano (and most non fretted stringed instruments), the strings are a different length, which help their performance, and this is what they try and replicate.

With such a wide tuning range, fanned frets can be crucial.

Dude, if I dropped it I'd kill myself before you could reach me. From one bassist to another, you just don't fuck with another man's bass. It's a more important rule than it is with women. Whenever we get another show together, or if we just happen to hang out or something, I have to try that beautiful piece of machinery.

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Jul 13,2007 12:04pm
That's if they fall for the trick Rev. You see, the said woman would say "It's either the bass or me" in which the gullable (sp?) falls for the trick and gives up the bass to said woman, not realizing that said instrument will never cheat on him ever.

I would have neeeeever gotten a maple fretboard on that thing, especially since it's not clearcoated. That's going to be a bitch to clean and will likely turn baby-shit green in 3 years.

toggletoggle post by Anthony at Jul 13,2007 12:46pm
Maple seems like a great choice to me. That thing will sing with a nice bright maple tone, especially since so much of the playing on it will be tapping out chords and arpeggios.

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at Jul 13,2007 12:49pm edited Jul 13,2007 12:50pm
Maple sounds and looks amazing, but raw maple is very difficult to take care of and keep it looking new.

That's why most production guitars with maple fretboards are clear coated, so hand oils dont turn them green.. and you can't use normal guitar cleaners and polishes either.

It's a hard habbit to get into, but you really gotta wash your hand before you play something like that. you really want to keep your investment looking pristine, you know?

toggletoggle post by Anthony at Jul 13,2007 1:20pm
Hmm I see your point. The only bass I've ever had with a maple board was clear-coated, so I didn't deal with that problem. My main bass' neck is Wenge with a small Ovangkol strip so I don't have to worry about dirtying that up.

The warwick right? you're technically supposed to steel-wool and re oil them with tung oil once a year or some shit but noone ever does.

I'm assuming that, since he mainly uses it for tapping, the sweatband keeps the unfretted strings from vibrating, cutting down on excess noise. That, or because it's metal.
