so to the people who work..do any of your companies do a united way day of caring?

my company seems to do one every few months. No complaints from me...get paid as if i'm at work but i'm not...i'm volunteering doing something else...
so far i've built a house in roxbury (habitat for humanity) and met the family who was going to live there too

volunteered at an animal shelter where i stuffed envelopes and met and adopted M. Emile Zola <insert pic aaron took>
and tomorrow painting in a youth home

anyone have any volunteer stories?

my company runs over my foot with a forklift and doesn't pay me workmans comp.

that's kindof like caring, right?

The main volunteer guy is hilarilous. He made us all breakfast and was telling us abt the lunch hre made with the teenagers and some didn't want to wear aprons..so he told them "what do u think, yer too fuckin cool to wear an apron? He's this big muscley guy and to hear him drop the f drop was hilarious.
Anyhow we're in seabrook nh and I've been ssraping paint inhaling asbestoc and eating lead paint

we get one day in the year where the Kayem Bratwurst 18 wheeler comes and makes us Bratwurst for 2 hours. the entire trailer is the grill, roughly a 53 foot cooking surface. its pretty sweet, but otherwise i am continuously under the bootheel of the man.

I've done volunteer work with Habitat through my school, but the company I am currently with doesn't do any volunteer stuff. Habitat is fun though, I would do it again.

I built houses in blorida with habitat (1996) and rebuilt roofs on dein (aka navajo) reservations in New Maxico (1994 took some killer *gasp* film shots)

it's funny, I remember all the details of the new mexico work and stuff... but I can't remember anything about the work I did in florida... I remember the trip down there, finding snakes and alligators, driving through miami, eating grits, but I'm a blank on what work I actually did to down there. odd.

The best thing i got here at staples was this thing called Founders Day. It was a massive bbq and they had carnival rides, go karts, fried dough and italian ice booths. They had carnival games and you could win small prizes and stuff, it was great to get out of work for like 2 hours. They had a volunteer thing where if you wanted you could go and help out working in the store but there is really no point to it.

I work at Hannaford in Hudson, NH - I don't think we have a day of caring, but every year we have a United Way campaign where associates have the opportunity to donate money in exchange for a chance to win cheapy prizes (video passbooks, gift certificates etc...)
Sometimes we break out the grill in front of the store entrance and sell hot dogs and hamburgers to raise money for United Way.

Thankfully nothing like that here. I think a day of caring would be the final straw to make me go postal.

Ok so I dripped paint on my head..and then quickly moved and wound up painting my coworkers butt with paint..ooops. At least he didn't get mad
