(just now that i cant get into stoner/doom metal, so this wont be about that kind of music at all) We know about bands like Shape of Despair, My Dying Bride, Evoken, Morgion, and whatnot... but lately there have been some bands that have been making amazing albums that havent really been talked about all that much. I'm talking about Draconian, Swallow the Sun, and Saturnus (even though Saturnus has been around for a long time). these guys keep coming out with releases and they just get better and better.

I bought a Draconian cd a couple years ago, thinking it was this other doom band and i was so lucky when it turned out to be what it was. Great romantic doom that could fit in the "funeral" at times, but other times its a little too fast for it. very atmospheric and very awesome. their newest effort is even better.

Saturnus i have been into since 01 when "Martyre" first came out or so. good doom. their older stuff is a little more "artsy" to me, but it still rules. their newest offering is awesome as well. depressing in a good sense. these guys can really play with emotions. "Veronika Decides to Die" is the name of the album. get it.

Swallow the Sun is a newer band. their first album came out in like 03 i think... i bought that because the band sounded like they were doom and i was right. Through Her Silvery Body. thats the first one. it was pretty good. then their second album came out "Ghosts of Loss". that album was just killer. they just released a new one that i havent even fully heard and it seems like they are progressing well. there are faster parts in the new one now as well as full on DOOM. "Hope" is the name of the new one, and you guys should look out for it.

basically if you are stuck on the classics and havent heard much of the new doom... check out these guys. great shit.

I own "Ghosts of Loss" and "The Morning Never Came" from Swallow The Sun and "Veronika Decides to Die" from Saturnus.

I honestly have never heard Draconian.

About 2 minutes into "Conceptual Funeralism", I wanted to slit my wrists to see if the blood was still flowing, I can't listen to doom for some reason, If it isn't fast and aggressive ,It usually don't keep my attention.

i cant say i like Draconian too much. Swallow the Sun is well done, but they do get boring after a while. to me, funeral doom is epitomized in Disembowelment. also Thergothon. i have been dying to check out Wormphlegm but i cant find any of their material.

Look for SUBSTANCE FOR GOD, it rules.

Would Insomnium be considered Doom metal?

I'm listening to "Above The Weeping World" but I can't quite put my finger on what they are.

that album reminds me of a doomy dark tranquillity.

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Jan 18,2007 4:26pm
There's more melody on this album than I originally expected.

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at Jan 18,2007 5:35pm
Bump.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jan 18,2007 5:42pm
officium triste and mournful congregation are wicked doom too

toggletoggle post by niflheim at Jan 18,2007 6:41pm
The guitarist of Funeral has a side project called "Fallen" which is excellent doom. Catacomb's "In the Depths of R'lyeh" was a good release last year, and Ahab's 'Call of the Wretched Sea". Thergothon just re-released "Fhtagn nagh Yog-Sothoth" on vinyl as a limited release. The new Esoteric is still in the works, which will be amazing, and hopefully Skepticism will arise from obscurity to once again show everyone how it's done.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jan 18,2007 7:41pm
Fallen is awesome

I generally have that outlook too, but I think the thing that pisses me off the most about doom is that most bands in this genre basically sound no different than mainstream alternative rock bands only they play slightly heavier and have screaming vocals. If you're going to play slow, play as slow as possible like Ocean. If you're going to sound depressing, take it to an extreme like Khanate. I don't see what the point is of being some lame half-ass band that sounds like the same mainstream horse shit everyone else is doing.

what the ass are you talking about? its sounds to me like you have no grasp on the concept of doom.

My ears aren't lying to me.

It's worth noting that the newest Aldebaran album coming out soon should be absolutely devastating. I see it possibly being my favorite Doom release of this year.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Jan 18,2007 7:58pm
what sounds mainstream about doom? what "doom" are you listening too?

Not new to doom, that's for sure, but Trouble does have a new album coming out after a long hiatus. the first two albums rule, and i like this tune, Plastic Green Head

Speaking of this genre of music I'm not into... when I ordered my Pestilence live CD they gave me 2 free CDs with the order. Monumentum and Officium Triste. I don't like these CDs so if anyone wants them, they're yours.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Jan 19,2007 10:36am
Warhorse is also excellent stoner doom.

are you a Disembowelment fan? they have some aggresive parts mixed in with the lead heavy funeral doom. i have to agree on some bands, some play so slow and never change the tempo and it gets so boring. but the Disembowelment/Evoken style is where its at. its soul draining and sounds like its recorded in a tomb.
