he should be the new DEP drummer.

I'm gonna start a grind band where I just take recorded drum solos and put br00tal guitar tracks over them. We'll seem like improvisational jazz nerd geniuses instead of the talentless hacks that we are. It'll be sweet.

He can barely play necrophagist, i don't think he would do to well in DEP.

I didn't realize who it was at first, i was like "this guys set is exactly like minnemann's"

He can barely play Necrophagist? Are you joking? I'm not even a Necrophagist fan, but this guy is a machine. I was honestly bored by them at Summer Slaughter, but this guy nails everything. One of the top drummers IN THE WORLD along with guys like Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, etc.

Marco rules, but that solo was boring and unimaginative.

Except he didn't play everything perfect at the show. He jazzified a lot of the rhythms which was retarded, it's death metal, stay to what the recordings are like. He's not the right drummer for them at all.

I agree. While they're great drummers, Marco Minnemann and Mike Mangini are my least favorite "drum gods".

I don't see why he should have to play exactly like the recordings. He's not the old drummer. He can add his own flavor. Pardon him for wanting to throw in just a TINY BIT of his ability outside of his solo.

The scary thing is that those cowbell notes you hear are NOT on the downbeats.

when joining a new band you should learn the parts exactly as they are played on the record. you know if the guitarist added his own flavor to his solo's live, everyone would be pissed. i feel the same about the drummer. He's an amazing drummer, has no business being in that band.

What were they? I didn't listen to the video closely enough because I was turned off by the bad video and sound quality, but I was assuming it was something like a 4 over 3 polyrhythm.

That's cool if that's how you feel, but honestly, I think that's bogus. I'd say there's naturally more freedom when it comes to parts with drumming because MOST OF THE TIME the drummer IS NOT playing a melody. Sure, there are some parts and fills that should maybe be left alone, but I think most of a song should be free game. This is how I feel, being a drummer. As always, everything is subjective.

toggletoggle post by archaeon at Jul 16,2007 9:12pm
Word man, I might feel different about an other band, but with Negropianist all songs should be played perfect. I'm surprised Muhammad let Marco go all out like that, he's suppose to be a pretty anal guy.

toggletoggle post by timjohn at Jul 16,2007 9:41pm
i hear where archaeon is coming from. i couldn't make it to the show so i can't really comment too in depth. i def agree that a lot of the drummer's parts should be loyal to the original parts, but i am not so rigid in my thinking. i mean, it is one thing to skank where a blast is supposed to go, and another thing to add a little flair here and there to accentuate your natural talents. not sure how far marco took it though. i realllllllly hope i get to catch this band / drummer combo live.

I heard he triggers his cowbells.

marco himself admits he can't play a lot of the fastest 'double kick' parts of the necrophagist for the lengths of times they go without tiring which is why he does alternate rhythms in some sections.

AND you ask WHY CAN'T HE PLAY THE KICK DRUM FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME NEEDED? BECAUSE HE DOESN'T TRIGGER HIS KICK DRUMS...therefore he hits too hard and tires himself.

besides generally blowing every death metal drummer away, he would need to build up his speed and stamina for death metal bpm's, which pretty much 'anyone' can do if you sit there and blast all day....or use triggers

+1

i'd rather see someone who can create more imaginative parts rather than just playing whats on the record

I don't even play the songs the same exact way each time, i'm always trying new things, adding in different feeling for the part, as long as it's tight, it fits, and it compliments what's going on in the rest of the song

I'm pretty sure that's called "being a musician."

toggletoggle post by timjohn at Jul 17,2007 10:07am
not necessarily. is there anything "not musical" about playing the exact same drum parts EVERY single time you play the song?

no, it is still definitely musical. some might argue that is boring and unimaginative, but there are certainly some styles of music where this would be completely appropriate.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jul 17,2007 10:11am
musicians are overrated.
