all the computers I have made run sporadically. from now on, I'm either just being a no-os unit from pricewatch or a dell. If I have to do more than a new HD or more RAM, fuck it.

yes, cause I pack in all the "good" stuff I bought from previous computers. The computer I bought/put together last year would crap out at 1 1/2hr mark or whenever I taxed the CPU hard. I finally got around to removing all the excess hardware and it's running awesome. I even burn the CPU in ubuntu with semper pi and it ran all night. but now I have a pile of crap that I'm not going to put back in.

in that same time, my work dell has been rebooted (not including power outages) once and I use that thing EVER single day.

You have to carefully pick components to integrate, inspect every part carefully, and make sure you don't create static problems.

My record has been much different -- I've blown up some shit, and fried some other shit with long-term problems, but in general, the machines I make are faster and more stable than the Dells I've had.

Of course, I am *** really fucking anal *** when it comes to tech, and unlike many programmers and sysadmins, I don't dislike hardware.

If you ever come to Houston, let's go part shopping. We'll make you a mega-computing-macropenis.

best advice is never buy bottom of the barrel hardware, and especially don't skimp on RAM or the power supply.

toggletoggle post by Conservationist  at Sep 26,2008 3:50pm
Skimping on the power supply is for Apple(tm) exclusively.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Sep 26,2008 4:52pm
u probably need a better power supply

Just buy Alienware computers circa 1997

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Sep 26,2008 5:27pm
I check the wattage of the power supply and it idles at 120 so that's fine. all of the other compnents were top of the line when I bought them.

I always pay a little more for core components and get quality. Peace of mind I guess. Piece of mimes.

the system worked with a few random reboots and having something mess up when booting windows (ubuntu won't load at all). Today, the bios takes 5 minutes to load and then it never completes loading windows. fuck building your own system.

You see all those parts in there Homer? That's why your robot never worked.
