I have been listening to a lot of really stripped down Black metal, a lot of droney stuff, and I'm looking for more bands in the nerve of Mouth of the Architect, Giant, Agalloch, Darkthrone, old Dimmu, Burzum, Callisto, Thou, Conifer...as you can see, I am painting with broad strokes.

Help a kneegrow out.

Callisto? must be a different band from the power metal on.

you want shoegazing fo' real? what about space rock?

molasses is awesome stuff. I suggest just putting in slowdive/slowdive and then mellow out.

yeah, I'm talking about Callisto from Finland. They are awesome.

as far as shoegaze stuff, I'm thinking things more on the drone side, not the alternative, early-90's Jesus&Mary Chain, Dino Jr spin off stuff.

Recently I've been in love with sound.

ha! I found that callisto on my computer.

a minor forest, azusa planes (burnt hair), americana analog set, angels of unlight, auburn lull (ftw!), mohogany, bethany Curve (somone on this board turned me on to them), the sound track to the movie dutch harbor, codeine, damon & naomi, windy and carl, low, dead voices on air, eluvium, garrison, gluestick's 2nd album.

I don't feel like looking through my mp3s anymore.

stripped-down black metal/ambient/shoegaze kings right now, to me, is Darkspace.
check them out. it's somewhat hard to actually find their albums, but I think soundcave has them (or used to).
Regardless, you can download it.

the term shoegaze was originally coined in england in the late 80s-early 90s I believe. most of the musicians in the bands were droned the fuck out and would remain somewhat motionless, hence gazing at their shoes.
i believe, now, it's just a generic term for any drone-type bands. but yea, gaze at your shoes when you're tripping out and you'll understand.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 23,2008 2:23pm
lately, I've heard the explanation added that so much of it is effects oriented that you actually look like you're staring at your shoes to an audience.

more likely drugs though

as far as that band Darkspace goes, let me try to explain what they sound like:
first off, don't expect unbelievable production. the production isn't that great, but it's fucking awesome and adds to the atmosphere.
they primarily focus their music/ideals on space, so you can assume how ambient it is. they have a lot of ambient key parts, but when the blackmetal kicks in, it throws you right into a trance. their music bombards the walls of my consciousness and attacks my subconscious to a point where you're feeling in a trance-like state.
if you like darkthrone, if you like shoegaze, if you like space-like ambience, then I HIGHLY recommend anyone of their releases. I believe they have their 1st demo or release available on their webpage.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 23,2008 2:33pm
also, they are friends with one of my favorite bands, Lunar Aurora - a german BM band. Lunar Aurora's "Zyklus" album is almost the same way. again, one of the best trance-inducing black metal albums ever.

the musicians were socially awkward and would be uncomfortable on stage so they would just stare at their shoes (feet pointing inward). see my bloody valentine.
