Some of you may remember the Quantum Heresy shit i was working on over the summer in between classes and working on Pathogenic stuff. I finally finished the album a couple of weeks ago, and threw it up for free download. Influences are Explosions In The Sky, Meshuggah, Ion Dissonance, Suffocation, Cynic, Opeth.

It's one of those cd's that's meant to be listened to beginning to end. Conceptually in a nutshell it's about some dood (The Traveler), in a journey of enlightenment, witnesses the beginning and end of creation and the universe. Upon finding out that the beginning and end are connected he goes back to tell his findings but is sent into exile for heretical views of creation and reality, so he decides to go back to the end of the universe and comes into contact with his prior self, creating an infinite feedback loop, and everything is then destroyed. Trust me, it ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE after you listen all the way through. If you happen to enjoy psychedelics, those are highly recommended for this album. If not, try it out anyways, who knows, you might like it.

Track listing:
01 - The Pillars of Creation
02 - Rift
03 - Anomalous Temporal Reaction
04 - Desperate Landing
05 - Finally, Terra Firma
06 - Abrupt Exile
07 - Intersecting Thoughts
08 - Chronoscape
09 - The Great Ripping

Why is it free?

I'd be crazy to try to make people pay for this, and want it to try to reach as large of an audience as possible.

music for the sake of fuckin' music.

good stuff.

Will definitely DL and listen when I get home. Have you ever heard of Cloudkicker?

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 10,2009 3:03pm
Thanks Reimroc.

YES.

I love cloudkicker, was also a huge influence in writing. For the next album i'm hoping to go less ADD and a more well thought out sorta Post-Djent or Shoegaze-Djent or something haha.

Let's hear some opinions, i'm interested in what you guys think of this, even if you hate it, i'd like to hear what about it that's hated haha.

def gonna dl when i get a chance. very excited to hear this.

It's kind of funny because I was considering starting a project kinda like this but more heavily post rock. I'm still going to do it but it might end up being just post-rock/ambient. Maybe I will be inspired when I listen to this.

So far I am really digging this, but I honestly can't figure out why there are no vocals. This stuff would have definitely benefited from a human element like a voice.

It's cool, a little too wanky since all that's really in the foreground for the listener is layered guitars. The riffs are really cool and I am truly impressed with your ability to put together all this off time shit. I just wish there was vocals.

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Sep 10,2009 3:36pm
Also despite there being interspaced elements of clean guitars, backwards loops, etc there are really long periods of the same dynamic / amplitude, so at first it's like YEAH THIS PART FUCKING RIPS but then they'll be three loud heavy off-time parts right next to each other so I kind of felt lost.

Half of me is really feeling this and the other half is feeling like it needs something, kind of like when you eat at a usually awesome restaurant but the food needs spice.

Downloading, i'll give an opinion lataaaa.

toggletoggle post by The_Rooster  at Sep 10,2009 3:54pm
Dig the concept. I'm DL'ing it now.

Also think it's really cool that you're offering it up for free.

Thetasteofsilver: Wow, thanks doug (taste of cigarettes) at least i think that's your name haha. I actually love constructive criticism, because that means the person REALLY listened to it and thought about it.

I never noticed that stuff until you said that but you're right, the melodic and heavy parts don't play off of each other nearly as well as they could. I'm definitely going to take that into account for when i write more material for the 2nd cd. I was also planning on adding vocals too even before you mentioned that haha, but you're right it felt like it could have more of a human element though, i'm toying w/ the idea of having vocals not be the main focus, but have it be more like another texture or a way to build a part like a guitar lead or solo.

The next cd is going to have a lot more of the -post/shoegaze stuff but spiced up a little but in terms of technicality. I'm going to try and focus a lot more on the songwriting too. Thanks for the constructive criticism though, I actually agree with most of it haha.

The_Rooster: yeah, Free shit FTW. Next album i'll actually bother to make a cover. The only thing i'm asking people to do is to send the link to DL it to as many people as possible, and show/give it to whoever they think will like it. FREE SHIT FTW.

The pathogenic album won't be free though haha

I like it a whole bunch so far. I happen to love soundscapes and instrumental kinds of music.

That said... This music needs a vocalist real bad.

The music has enough to say on it's own. But it rocks out too hard not to have someone doing vocals over it all.

So you should do another concept. The work here is fine. I just think you could make way more kick ass shit wit some screamin.

Will smoke up and listen to this again later..

That's exactly what I was thinking, too. Probably not some dude yammering away but more just using the throat and vocals and certain words to highlight parts. Less a story perhaps and more about adding to the music. To The Wolves kind of did this live when they drenched the vocals in echo and reverb and it worked really well. Glad you appreciate the crib notes.

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 10,2009 5:05pm
I'm thinking of having it be still a mix of singing and screaming...but have it be way less prominent and frequent, like maybe 4 or 5 lines per song max, so it's still mainly instrumental, so that the vocals more or less just compliment parts rather than being a focus all the time

Just started listening. I can already say I'm not a fan of the guitar tone. I'll let you know what I think about the music once I'm done with the whole thing.

I kind of liked it. It was heavy.

For all my shit I go for the overdriven tube kind of thing, sort of like Led Zeppelin / The Who / Hendrix. But I don't expect everyone else to.

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 10,2009 6:42pm
yeah, the guitars were just recorded direct in on my Motu so tone leaves a bit to be desired if you're into a certain sound

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Sep 10,2009 7:00pm
I just started the download, and I'll give it a listen on the way to and from work tomorrow.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 10,2009 7:03pm
In general, I was impressed by the production, the tone just wasn't rounded off and if it was recorded direct, that makes sense. I don't know where you live but if you do another one of these, I'll let you borrow by Engl e530 that's coming in tomorrow! It has an output just for things like this.

Also, I really liked the clean tone. I didn't get the finish the cd yet though. I have to go make dinner and I'll finish it while I'm soldering some stuff after.

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 10,2009 7:05pm
An Engl? sweet tits. Yeah those are pretty much the perfect tone for this stuff haha

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 10,2009 7:07pm
I'll hopefully be getting a Mesa 20/20 soon to go with it so if you wanted to use that with it, I'd be down. It also has a slave out for direct-in type stuff.

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 11,2009 2:08pm
The album is now uploaded in it's entirety for streaming up on myspace for those who do not have download capabilities, or wish to not waste a precious 50 MB of hard drive space.

http://myspace.com/quantumheresy

That mesa and Engl combination sounds ballin'

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Sep 11,2009 2:12pm
shit, you could borrow that stuff and reamp all of the guitar tracks for this if you have a box for it.

that would sound epic

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Sep 11,2009 2:15pm
I'm gonna take a heroic dose sometime this weekend and give this a run.

toggletoggle post by secthammer at Sep 11,2009 2:15pm
Nah, wish i had the equipment/space for it at the moment, unfortunately umass lowell's dorms aren't so productive for the metal.
