the reverend's guide to laptop brands:

macs: amazingly reliable machines built on slightly older hardware than current PCs with an OS that runs faster than windows on the older hardware, but costs 2 to 4x the price. Oh and none of the software you have bought in your life will work on it.

Dells: cheap and take a beating. Stay away from PIII and PIV's. those were terrible.

Sony: 2x-4x the cost, but all the latest and greatest technology. Packed into a super light laptop. Down side is that they are delicate.

IBM (chinese): 2x the cost of dells, but take the most beating besides toughbooks.

panasonic: tough books. 2 year old technology, but a cop can spill coffee on the keyboard and they still work.

Toshiba: do they still make laptops? They were bulky boxes. Now they are HPs that try to pretend they are sonys.

HP/Compaq: bulky crap that breaks easily. But hell, for a $400 laptop meant for college freshmen girls, what do you expect?

Alienwares: 4x-6x the price, but you get the latest and greatest aimed at gamers.

note: I have owned /still own a toshiba, 2 dells, and an ibm.
