toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Sep 4,2006 6:21pm
buy the melissa cross dvd

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Sep 4,2006 6:48pm
that dvd is indeed helpful, but only for breath control really. keep in mind that not everyone can do black metal vocals, some were born to do it. dont hurt yourself trying to do something you might not be designed to do.

A training video on black metal vocals kind of seems...out of place.

quit

toggletoggle post by necrochrist  at Sep 4,2006 7:03pm
i have that dvd. i must have missed the part that teaches you how to sound like legion

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Sep 4,2006 7:09pm
well it doesnt really tell you how to sound a certain way, it tells you how to sound the way you want without injuring yourself. but again, some people just dont have the capacity for that. i would love to sound like Themgoroth and the singer from Setherial, but i couldnt possibly get that kind of sound. i am a vocalist but i just dont have that ability.

this isnt about the dvd. i have it and i watched it a few times, i know what she talks about. i just wanna know different techniques on how do to BM vox.

toggletoggle post by Anthony nli at Sep 4,2006 7:49pm
The high screech vox can be tough to get the hang of, but they are easy once you can get comfortable doing them. To warm up I sometimes do a few thrash/hardcore midrange yells and then build up to the really high vox. It helps to keep my voice down in my gut.

Do what most Black Metal singers do and gargle with freshly squeezed semen. Oh, and hail Satan while you do it.

Don't forget to live in your parents' basement.

His essence is not in you. It is not meant for you.

the best tip that i could suggest is to be under a black funeral moon at midnight

the key to doing successful screams is the willingness to torture yourself. if you're ready to quit because your throat hurts then you're a puss and you'll never get it.

Exactly.

If it didn't hurt, it probably wasn't worth doing.

when I was like 18 I did vocals for a band that practiced every Sunday. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to talk without it hurting until Wednesday. But I got my screams the way I wanted them and eventually it stopped hurting. The singer of BOTN told me his vocals used to be really weak, then when he was younger he did a handful of shows with strep throat. It probably hurt like hell but after that he had way more power in his voice.

I used to get all fucked up doing the vocals back in the day, after awhile my throat just tore and I got used to it.

cast a different spell

Scream. There's really not much difference between "little timmy, watch out for that car!" or "GO TEAM GO!" and "The angel of death is going to stab you in the cunt!"

Just scream. Just like after the pep rally, sox game, or saving little timmy's life, your voice might be a little hoarse the next day.

Well there's definitely truth to what you're saying Pete, but I think it would be pretty hilarious if I went to a kids' soccer game and all the parents were cheering "GO TEAM GO" in an Ihsahn-styled screech. You definitely have to train your voice to make the specific noises that are used in metal.

You don't have to train shit. As you beat the crap out of your vocal chords, through practice you'll find different tones and registers that are available to you. Just like you'd sound different between "go team go" and "put down that knife you cunt! I didn't fuck your sister!".

As for pitch, just like any other form of singing: high notes come from high in your throat, lower notes come from your diaphragm. I have no idea how to spell diaphragm. Is that right?

toggletoggle post by pam   at Sep 5,2006 6:32pm
It's def. gonna tear up your throat, but I never really had much pain. I kinda agree that you can either do it or you can't...but it's worth the practice if you think it will help.

you're disagreeing with me but that's exactly what I meant by "train."

Black Metal is no joke.

Heres what I do...........Just throw in your favorite Black Metal band(mine is Setherial)and open up the cd booklet and sing along till all the lyrics are memorized. The music should be up loud and you should sing directly into the speaker so you can match your voice with his. try throwing in some death metal growls so you can balance out your vocals a little because to much sreaming in the same pitch will kill a certain part of your vocal chord. When ever that happens to me I have to switch to a different vocal pattern. There are many different vocal patterns for instance there is Deicide and there is Morbid Angel. Deicide sings with the full vocals from the bottom of Glens lungs while Morbid Angel Just uses the throat in most of the newer vocals. It's the same way with Marduk and Emperor. Legion uses every breath and lets it just run right out with Blasphemy while Isahn holds his breath and lets it out slowly. Hope this tip will help you out a little.

here's a black metal vocal tip, don't do black metal vocals. seriously....it's annoying
