Somerville - Police arrested a South Boston man in Somerville on Feb. 8 after reportedly finding a packet of crack cocaine protruding from his butt.

Investigating narcotic activity on the street at 8:34 p.m., Drug Control Unit detectives from Somerville and Cambridge Police departments zeroed in on a Dresden Circle residence after receiving citizen complaints about alleged drug activity there.

A source reportedly contacted detectives regarding defendants John J. Fay, 40, of 329 Riverside Ave., Medford, and Miguel Jean Baptiste, 24, of 30 Gavin Way, South Boston, who were in the area and allegedly conducting illegal drug transactions from a car.

Known to police from a previous drug arrest, Jean Baptiste was reportedly spotted using his cell phone in a green Saturn. Fay was also in the car.

Police set up surveillance, and the defendants were seen going to an apartment building on Lancaster Street in Cambridge; detectives noted their actions were consistent with covert street-level narcotic transactions.

Once the defendants drove back to Somerville, detectives stopped the car around 380-400 Somerville Ave.

While approaching, detectives Dominic Pefine and Kevin Shackelford reportedly saw Jean Baptiste moving about furtively on the front passenger seat and reaching for his behind. He was asked to come out. As he did, police saw his pants were not right and his bottom exposed.

Cambridge detective Edward Liberacki reportedly saw a clear plastic bag containing a herbal substance believed to be marijuana on the car seat, in plain view.

Fay was also asked to step out of the car. When questioned, he said he picked up Jean Baptiste a few hours earlier from his South Boston home, and had been with him since.

Fay also made some incriminating statements to the investigators, according to the report.

During a search, Jean Baptiste reportedly became agitated and verbally abusive. While searching below the waistline, without using any intrusive measures, detectives reportedly spotted a clear plastic bag protruding from the crevice of his buttock, and Inspector James Hyde reportedly pulled out a bag of crack cocaine.

Both men were arrested and charged with drug possession with intent to distribute.

The incident occurred within 1,000 feet of the Kennedy School and the Lincoln Park School.

More Somerville crack fun!

----

SOMERVILLE - Police arrested three men reportedly trying to make crack cocaine in a van on a public street on Feb. 15, and seized a variety of drug paraphernalia.

Responding to Kingman Road at 8:15 p.m. for reports of men smoking pot in a van, Somerville Police officers Richard Lavey, Alan Monaco and Daniel Rego found three men in a blue van parked at the end of the street.

As they approached, they reportedly saw known defendant Robert Michael Vallery, 44, of 59 Albion St., reach into his lap, and driver Thomas Albert Ryan, 45, of 17 Kingman Road, reach towards the floor of the vehicle.

All three were asked to come out of the van.

As they got out, Monaco reportedly noted a small glass pipe on the floor where Ryan had been reaching. As Vallery exited, Lavey reportedly saw a knife on the passenger seat. A second pipe was reportedly found on the floor next to a third man in the van identified as Daniel Sensale, 42, homeless, of Somerville.

Officers found the glass pipes had burn marks and a bit of steel wool stuffed in one end, consistent with pipes used to smoke crack cocaine.

A search of the van then led to the discovery of two bags of a white powder believed to be cocaine, as well as a box of baking soda, a can cut in half and some more steel wool. The can also had burn marks on it, and the paraphernalia found reportedly convinced detectives that the defendants had been trying to make crack cocaine.

The items were seized, and all three men were charged with drug possession and taken to the police station to be booked, according to the report.
