I think that this album really is kind of ground breaking. It's not your typical black metal at all. It's nothing like old Satyricon, but nonetheless it's great.
It really reminds me of bands like Danzig. The music is fairly simple, extremely dark, and catchy as hell. Not at all black metallish. I dig the grooves, mixed with some very European guitar riff structure.
I dunno guys, I dun dern respect yall's opinions, but I'm really digging this album lately. I hated it at first, but man...it really started to grow on me.
If you actually sit and think about what exactly happened to Satyricon, one will realize that he wanted to sound like Thorns. Thorns s/t is what Satyr wished he sounded like. Definitely his biggest influence in writing music post-Nemesis. The new stuff is like watered down Thorns so he can appeal to a "wide" fan base.
The sole reason why I do not like any new Satyricon (other than a couple of tracks off of Rebel and Volcano) is because a.) Frost is wasting his talent by not utilizing it anymore
and b.) Satyr wants to sound like Thorns

This album is a huge, steaming pile of shit. It sounds as if one were to listen to later AC/DC with semen clogging their ears.
I must say though, Satyr is a pretty chill guy. At least he was when I was talking to him back when Trym was touring with them. Trym on the other hand...
I remember Trym being kind of a douche. My old band Acephalus opened for Morbid Angel, Exhumed & Zyklon at the Palladium back in 2001 and the show was a day or two after Soilent Green dropped off the tour when they were in a major van accident. The non-headlining bands on the tour had been using SG's drumkit so our drummer offered for them all to use his kit. Exhumed was totally cool and thanked us onstage and everything, but all Trym did was bitch and whine about how old the drum heads were, how the toms were out of tune, etc... and he wouldn't allow the trigger brain to be turned on for our set, even though the kit was already triggered up and miked. I guess he would have been happier playing NO kit instead?
It's funny that you all have the near same opinion of this. I was talking to a good friend (JWW of Agalloch) about this post today and told him of the opinions that I have read and he simply replied, "Fuck it, who cares what they think?" He toured with Satyricon on this last Euro stint and mentioned that Satyr was a really cool dude and that he dug the shit out of "Now, Diabolical." He's actually the one who turned me on to it, as I hated old Satyricon (which he bitches at me about constantly); he loves it all. Anyhow, it's just interesting to hear what other people have to say. I love the album.
And Lancelot (anonymous pussy), call me what you will...but remember that I'm not the one who throws insults under an anonymous alias...if that tells you anything about yourself. Grow a set of nuts, and sling shit later. If you're not willing to stand behind your words in person, then your words are insincere at best.

Aside from eating pussy all day, I would say the same of JWW's band. Hasn't been good since the beginning. Bunch of sellout faggots.
You fuckin heard it right. How about you ask JWW why they NEVER EDITED the metronome out of some parts on PALE FOLKLORE? HUH? WHY DONT YOU ASK HIM THAT
Because he's a useless pussy and won't have an excuse....
There is no metronome...it's called a "click track" you retard.
You're obviously not a musician.

Fuck you buddy. We're both huge BUSH SUPPORTERS but there is a metronome. AND I QUOTE
"A click track is a series of audio cues used to synchronize sound recordings, often to a moving image. It can be thought of as a recording of a metronome in that it serves a similar purpose."
See if you can find it. It fucking fades out very quickly, right at the end of an acoustic part.
Dude...I've heard it on a hundred albums at least. All of the albums with the exception of one were recorded digitally....which means...BAM, you got it, click track.
on a side note, I listened to Thorns s/t album again last night and I must say, DAMN he was influenced by it. It is of no surprise that he writes riffs with him now.
Personaly, I wish satyricon sounded more like Thorns and Tartaros if you ask me
and about agalloch - sorry Hoser, I think I may have to agree with that troll. I like all albums by them, but I think Pale Folklore is their most powerful and atmospheric release.
dude, this album is fucking garbage. this is basically the sickest, lamest attempt at making "black metal" accessible. its pretty much pop. Volcano is ok, it has its moments, but even that showed signs of impending failure. Now, Diabolical represents the total collapse into failure. if Agalloch told you that the new Emmure was black metal, 10 minutes later there would be a "Emmure is the most beautiful black metal ever" thread.
i agree with Jim, they should have just become a clone of Thorns, that would at least be entertaining. i love old Satyricon, but Satyr always seemed to be the guy jumping up and down in the midst of the 90's black metal movement saying "LOOK GUYS, I CAN MAKE BLACK METAL TOOOO!!!"

Downloaded it; reminds me of later Samael or something I cannot place at this minute. Drums are very disco.

That's not true at all Yeti...you negative nancy. I will say that JWW has a much more educated opinion on any music over the likes of you, as it is his life after all. He DOES happen to write for a shitload of magazines, and does nothing but review music all day for a living. I dunno...ummm...wait what do you do again? With that said, there was no reason for you to be a rude little dicked prick. I wasn't rude at all. I also think that obviously Satyr is doing something right, as I don't see you anywhere of recognition aside from being an internet troll. At least you log in to be a whiny pussy, which is more than others can say.

so let me get this straight, because this guy reviews music for a "living", that makes his opinion mean more than mine? that is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard. you really stuffed your head further up your ass on this one, me expressing my opinion is absolutely no different than you expressing yours, except apparently in this case because its you, and your opinion matches your boyfriends, i am somehow a whiny pussy. nice Republican logic, dumbass.
opinions are always subjective, no matter how educated someone is on the matter.
that's like saying if a chef hates chocolate cake, but you like it, their opinion matters more because they are a chef. horrible analogy but you should get my drift.
i'm going to bump this to further express how horribly atrocious this album is. "A New Enemy" is on Pandora right now and its making me gag. i've exceeded my limit on skipping songs. argh.
I like The Age of Nero. It rocks like newer Darkthrone, yeah it's not as good and doesn't have the same attitude, but you know..it's a solid rock album.
id rather listen to rampant decay with fran drescher on vocals doing accoustic limp bizkit covers for the rest of my life than have to hear another 1/4 of a second off of this horrendous abomination of a satyricon album

OK this first, then Type O Negative, then SatyriKoRn.
