I've always wanted to play piano, but never actually learned beyond screwing around with it. There's a full size keyboard in my basement, and my life is a depressing mess so I'd like to fill in the little free time I have doing something constructive. I definitely don't have the time or money for lessons.

Any of you musicians want to throw some wisdom at me?

Yes. I never took piano lessons, but was always screwing around with it ever since I can remember. Not sure what you're aiming for, but I always just experimented around with classical-sounding music. I then ventured into jamming with the beats the keyboard has. It's probably one of the funnest instruments to screw around with in music. But if you want to be a real piano player, take lessons.

What kind of keyboard is it?

itll be hard to be a good pianist with no lessons, but you can certainly become a proficient keyboardist. especially with a little theory knowledge.

I took lessons a long time ago and have been wanting to get back into it and having basically taught myself guitar (except for the most basic of basics) I really don't feel it should be all that hard.

Something you should do is watch videos of famous pianists playing. Watch their technique. How they sit, how their fingers are curled, how they move. A lot of the trouble with piano comes from poor posture and poor finger technique. The thing that always got me though was the two hand coordination. Being a guitarist, both my hands work in unison and I find it pretty hard to get them to work with different rhythms.

Besides watching videos, I would say just goof around. Download some sheet music and start slow. Eventually, the learning curve will take over and you'll be learning much quicker.
Good luck!

If it's a Yamaha PSR-76 I can tell you a secret about the keyboard where you can get a hidden instrument. If not, fail.

use guitar pro and turn on the keyboard view

toggletoggle post by spaldino at Oct 13,2009 2:51pm
guitar pro is awesome

my bandmate taught himself like every instrument. he is now focusing on piano. best thing to do since you have played bass is to transpose what you do on bass to the piano. view everything as you would playing bass.

I dug it out of the basement. Plugged it in. Turned it on and mashed a few keys. Thus transferring everything I know about bass onto the keyboard.
