This was with Pat, not me. I believe Gary is always looking for bands to interview so if you're interested contact him through the TFTP page.

Interview: #15 – Rampant Decay (Interviewed by King Gary).

I’ve known Rich from Rampant Decay for like 7 years now… maybe? But these guys are a great band, and a lot of fun. The very first time I saw them, we (Bitchslicer) traveled through a blizzard to play with them in 2007 or 2008. I think that might be the only time we played together, but they did hang out and play in our basement one time. (I am surprised they still talk to me after that one.) I think we should get something going again soon!

What is the name of your band?

Rampant Decay.

Where are you from?

Somerville (Boston), MA.

When did the band form?

October 2007.

How did the band come together?

Rich’s old band broke up and he told me he was moving to Fall River, MA, which is near where I live in Providence, RI. I asked him if he would want to do a band based on our mutual love of knuckle-dragging old-school New England hardcore music, metal, grind, powerviolence, etc. He recruited his former neighbor from Somerville to play drums and a mutual friend of ours who had played in bands with me in the past became our original bass player.

Where is the name from?

The name was something that I thought sounded good for this type of music and fit the 80′s HC/crossover feel to our band. It also reflects what we feel to be the state of the world around us and the system that we live in day to day in this country, as well as our general sense of morality.
For some reason I immediately think of someone who is missing half their teeth, and the remaining half are green with worms living inside the cavities. Am I the only one to associate dental decay with Rampant Decay?
You are not the first person to associate us with a sorry state of dental affairs. We probably won’t be writing any songs about it though since “Cavity Creeps” by Murphy’s Law can’t be topped.

What music have you released so far and on what formats?

So far, we’ve put out one self-released 11 track CD in a pressing of 100. We are planning on recording our half of a split 7″ with Boston fastcore maniacs Insult on Patac records within the next couple of months.

Which do you prefer and why: Cassette, Vinyl, CD, or MP3?

For sound quality and artwork, I prefer vinyl. I feel like it’s how a lot of the old records that I like, were meant to be heard. I like tapes because I have a cassette deck in my car and a lot of great demos on tape. I own a bunch of CDs because they’re cheap and easy to put on the iPod. The best thing about mp3 is being able to download long out-of-print releases to the iPod. Vinyl is my overall favorite, though.

Any thoughts or opinions on how both underground music, and the music industry are changing from anyone with a computer or smart phone being able to download music online?

I just don’t think it requires the same amount of effort that it used to. When I was a teenager I bought ‘zines and traded tapes with people, and read bands’ thanks lists to find out about good new stuff in underground music. The computer age is giving some really high-quality music wider exposure these days, and kids are finding out about bands like Repulsion and Infest earlier than they might have. It’s definitely good for underground bands to have more people coming to their shows because of something as simple as a Myspace page. Things are just more immediate than they used to be. I think this works for and against the integrity of underground music. As for the greater music industry, I think they have a lot less power over what people listen to and what artists are able to accomplish; which is a positive thing.

Have you play many shows (tour, shows with larger bands)?

We’ve played somewhere between 50 and 100 shows by now, the largest of which was opening a sold-out Eyehategod show at the Middle East in Cambridge.

The Middle East is pretty big, I bet that show was insane! Who else played?

Yeah, that show was a good time. The other bands were Howl, Strong Intention, Anal Cunt and Goatwhore.

Did you guys hang out and party with Eyehategod after the show?

I know Rich went in their backstage room so he could drink their Narragansetts. I met a couple of the guys, but spent most of my time drinking with friends at the bar. I don’t know if I could party New Orleans-style and live to tell about it.

What are you favorite bands?

I could go on all day about this subject. The quick answer would be Motorhead, Anti-Cimex, Sodom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Bad Brains, Brutal Truth, Turbonegro, The Hellacopters, AC/DC with Bon Scott, Slapshot, Disrupt, Siege. I’ll just stop there for now.

What are your biggest influences?

Nicke Andersson, Matt Pike, Lemmy, Tom Angelripper, Andy McCoy, Johnny Cash, Glenn Danzig, Mike Patton, Pete Helmkamp, Dan Lilker, Narragansett beer, bourbon and Irish whiskey

Have you heard the new Danzig album?

Yea, I like it. It is by far the best thing he’s produced since Danzig IV. Tommy Victor from Prong is a good guitar player for him, although I preferred the straight-forward, simplistic drumming style of Chuck Biscuits to the drumming on the new material.

What do you find offensive or obscene?

The band Godsmack, TMZ, Perez Hilton and other celebrity-chasing sycophants, people who think my band is racist, American Idol, Christian fundamentalists, beer with fruit flavors, frat boys, and cat puke.

Do people really think you guys are racist? Why? Do you address your
‘brothers’ from the stage during shows?

We get labeled all sorts of things. Punks especially are really over-sensitive these days, and when they see big, bald, angry white guys playing the kind of thing that RxDx plays with un-PC lyrics, we become the subject of all manner of idealistic nonsense. We usually make fun of ourselves and the crowd a lot from the stage.

What is your favorite porno?

Free shit online.

What is your favorite online spot to get free porn?

Spankwire.com and YouPorn

Who is your favorite porn actor/actress?

Priya Rai, Nina Mercedez, & Traci Lords.

Who is your favorite comic book or cartoon character?

Preacher or Punisher, I can’t decide which.

What do you spend the most time doing online?

Looking at records and guitar/drum gear.

Where is the best place to buy records online?

For metal, I really like Nuclear War Now!, Hell’s Headbangers, and Planet Metal. For punk, Crimes Against Humanity, Hardcore Holocaust, and Havoc. I still order a lot of things from smaller distros and directly from bands. I get a lot of things from Amazon as well. They have huge selection and fast shipping.

Elvis or the Beatles?

Elvis

God or Satan?

Crom.

Metallica. Your thoughts?

One of the greatest bands on the planet in the Cliff Burton era, OK in the Justice/Black album era, fucking wretched in the Load, ReLoad, St. Anger period. Death Magnetic is listenable but still not very good. They are pampered rock stars now.

If putting out an album like Load made you a multi-millionaire, would you
do it?

For me personally, without question. For Metallica, I thought it was entirely unnecessary. They were, or would have been, multi-millionaires anyway and had a shot at being the ultimate all-time American metal band. Instead they decided to turn into a shitty classic rock band and cry to their therapist in a movie.

Why should people listen to your band?

Because it’s vicious therapeutic punk/metal noise. And also because it causes dogs to lay with cats and women’s clothes to fall off.
