(it's only 830kb!)

here's my first clip ever... Unfortunately I don't have a mic/recording interface. So I used my singers POD 2 that I just fixed for him.

software:
ACID for recording guitars.
fruity loops w/ dfh wav files for programming drum track.

The way I had to record this was ghetto, I had to use my motherboard soundcard to record input, and my old ass soundblaster to do output so acid wouldn't record what was playing back over my speakers....I had to plug my headphones into the pod to hear what I was playing with one ear listening to my pc speakers. Can't wait to get an audio interface, I just can't decide what I want. I want to record with my friggen ENGL damnit!

There are a few recording interfaces I'm looking into getting, what do you recording guru's think? I mainly need something for just recording guitar maybe some vocals eventually.

Digidesign M-Box USB
Tascam US122 USB Audio/MIDI Interface
Edirol UA5

I'm leaning towards the M-box due to the fact that I'll be able to use protools with it.

Anything Digidesign is a good investment

also look for some inerfaces for nuendo. nuendo, to me, and other engineers sounds way fucking better, but isn't as popular as protools.

I like using Cubase, but no one really uses it and compared to ProTools doesn't sound all that great. It's what Scott Hull used for Pig Destroyer.

I just realized there is no user grade Nuendo stuff. I guess Cubase is the cheap version of nuendo.

If you do get an M-box make sure you spend the extra $100 on the software budle or you'll be pretty pissed about the whole situation.

man, I want a super nuendo so I can play super mario bros world.

i hate digi design. too expensive. way over rated.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/701376/

the digi has better preamps and that is about it. you might want different software with it. nuedo. acid. cool edit. sonar. etc. which most often can be found for free. kazaa or bearshare.

i also dont like usb controllers. unless you only had a laptop then id suggest usb. in fact i dont like recording on computers just mixing and editing and even that is a pain in the ass sometimes.

toggletoggle post by Josh_hates_you  at Nov 29,2004 8:58am
that recording actualy sounded alot better than i expected.

just keep nigga riggin it for a while.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Nov 29,2004 8:59am
that sounds good

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Nov 29,2004 9:33am
yo josh, I got protools 6.2 LE for free already online, but obviously it doesn't work without any digi hardware connected. Can you use any software with the m-box or are you forced to use protools?

I was looking at that PCI card a couple weeks ago, does software come with it so you can control it? I also need a soundcard to connect PC speakers too, can I connect them to that or would I need a seperate soundcard?

I was kind of avoiding PCI even though it's clearly faster than USB just because PCI express is coming.

I've downloaded cubase too and installed it but I don't have any hardware so it doesn't open. hahaha. I've heard about nuendo also, the guy from tesseract uses nuendo I think.

If I just buy and M-box without the software, could I just use my pirated copy of pro tools or is is super protected?

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Nov 29,2004 10:32am edited Nov 29,2004 10:33am
Digidesign M-Box w/ software - $500
M-Audio Omni Studio USB - $200
M-Audiophile 2496 w/ M-Audio buddy - $200
Delta 1010LT PCI Digital Audio System - $200
FIREPOD 10 Channel I/O with Cubase LE - $599
Other????

Hey guys, these are a few of the things I've been looking into getting. I'm pretty new to the recording world. I mainly want to be able to record high quality guitar tracks and possibly some vocals. I know USB is slow, but that doesn't mean the quality will suck. I'd prefer firewire, PCI will be going obsolete won't it? Which interface do you think will be the best bang for my buck but with excellent quality?

At the same time I do need a soundcard to replace my old soundblaster live. I'm not sure if I get a PCI recording card will I be able to hook my PC speakers up to it or not?

Where's Arrowhead from Pillory when ya need him?

toggletoggle post by attendmyrequiem at Nov 29,2004 1:29pm
the only downside to usb and the m-box is the m-box is powered by your computer and not an outside source. that degrades the qualilty a little bit. but i mean obviously you're doing semi-pro gear which doesn't matter that much.

if you buy an mbox i think a version of protools automatically comes with it, but you stole a better version of PT online, it should work, but i'm not sure at all about how the pirated versions work. there might be some weird shit depending on who cracked it right?

but honestly the only two i would be considering is the mbox and Cubase.

the digi 001 looks decent, pci...
why are you selling it?

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Nov 29,2004 1:53pm
my friend had the 001 he said it's finicky as hell and has compatability issues even if you meet all the requirements.

Im selling my digi 001 cause i have a digi 002. All recording platforms have bugs and all that shit. but if your a computer guy that will deffently help out. Digi has all the recomended specs on their website for what their shit requires.
I have had minimal problems.

I'm also looking at what the tesseract guy uses, that thing produces pretty good results. the delta 66 omni studio by m-audio... which is pci, but has the external unit as well. pretty decent price for it as well.

I'm on a abit ic7-max3 motherboard, p4 3ghz L2 cache, 1gig Corsair xms pro ddr500, 1 sata hd, 2 ide hd's.

toggletoggle post by HANDINJURY at Nov 29,2004 3:18pm
Your pc's plenty fast enough for just about any inferface/software.
(I ran 28 track w/ lots of plug-ins PT sessions on my sony P4 - 1024 ram - 2.4ghz)

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Nov 29,2004 3:25pm
sweet....

I think the omni studio may be more in my price range and delivers the best results for that price. Plus I'm new to recording and I think if I get anything too crazy I'm not going to be able to figure it out quickly.

haha yeah, that's what the title says kok ;)

I was sick of hearing other people make clips of it and not having the right drum parts or sounding like shit. so I made my own. haha.

toggletoggle post by HANDINJURY at Nov 29,2004 3:35pm
I get all my PT help from the duc, the duc rules!!!!!! without this i would prolly have bought a motu interface insted of the digi 002.

do a cheesy "into the dead sky" cover

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Nov 29,2004 10:16pm
so I just bought this:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWireSolo-main.html

with an SM57... All I need to record is one track at a time.

Unfortunately I can't find any reviews on the firewire solo. Blind purchase on this one. heh.

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Dec 6,2004 8:58pm edited Dec 6,2004 8:58pm
so yeah, I just got my SM57, and FIREWIRE solo, and the first thing I did to test it out was re-record the same clip...yes I know I'm killing this song hahaha.

http://www.watchtomhumponline.com/images/hosted/tom_spheres02.mp3
(it's only 860kb!)

(keep in mind I know nothing about mic placement, levels, or any of that shit yet, was also recorded at a low volume)

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Dec 6,2004 9:25pm
wow, my updated recording actually sounds good when you plug $100 headphones into your soundcard... can't wait to get new speakers.

toggletoggle post by Josh_hates_you  at Dec 6,2004 10:20pm
both recordings sound good here on a pair of Event TR6 s. the one you did thru your pod sounds a little more up front which is to be expected. which one is better depends on taste and what it would be mixed with.

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Dec 6,2004 10:22pm
the pod version sounds like a pile of mud, and does not replicate the tight/crisp sound of the actual song IMO...but I'll keep trying with my new setup with placement and levels.

I think if I add another track in the middle (stereo) it might make it sound a bit more in your face...I have lots of experimenting to do...What do you know about mic placement? Devin told me typically you record at practice/live levels...which I can't do too often mid week. So this may be tricky.

Fucking awesome. I play this riff all the time. God damn.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Mar 9,2005 10:54pm
I love that riff... I just keep waiting for the next part to jump in... lol!

the live recording sounds better then direct one, IMO....

now you have to record the next part

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Mar 9,2005 11:24pm
I'm confused as to what's going on. Is this a song tom wrote? or a song someone else wrote? is it for Porphyria? or for a solo thing? or just trying to record shit?

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Mar 9,2005 11:27pm
he's testing equipment for recording with a decapitated riff

Spheres of Madness from the CD Nihility (track 6)

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Mar 9,2005 11:36pm
just downloaded the actual song. It's pretty good. That riff never comes up again? Or comes up later in the song?

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Mar 9,2005 11:53pm
hahahah.. I hate that 1st clip I posted using the POD. why was this bumped?

ENGL mothafuka - http://www.watchtomhumponline.com/images/hosted/tom_spheres02.mp3

I never got around to recording the rest of this yet. I was more or less using it as just a test.

toggletoggle post by dreaminginexile   at Mar 10,2005 10:27am
PODs are gay... no clue why this was bumped, but it's pretty friggin tight man!

so when are you going to give me you ENGL head and Necrophagist hoodie LOL!

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Mar 10,2005 10:37am
well I wouldn't call pods gay, they are cool for what they are. I also like how you can plug in headphones to it and jam out anywhere. That thing is broken now anyways.

about the head/hoodie. NO/NO. hahah.

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Mar 10,2005 10:42am
Pods are definitley not gay. I love mine. to each his pally!!

so when you guys playing with us again? (Shroud)

toggletoggle post by powerkok   at Mar 10,2005 10:50am
Dan said something about a couple of RI shows with you guys, so as soon as I get some details, I'll post em on hcn, but hopefully soon!!! \m/
what rackmount was that, you were using? a digitech rp?

toggletoggle post by dreaminginexile   at Mar 10,2005 10:57am
no, it's a Behringer V-Amp pro (like the pod, only sounds better and like $400 cheaper) I just need a better power amp for it, my peavey one blows.

Porphyria needs to play one of those shows too... they own!
