cinco de mayo is a mexican holiday used to honor their dead. basically it has nothing at all to do with america but people now are treating it like the new paddy's day.

The French would come back and beat the Mexicans at Puebla, take control of Mexico City and install Austrian aristocrat Maximillan Hapsburg as Mexican Emperor, but the morale boast of beating the French on May 5th would carry Mexicans through three years of war without the U.S.'s aid.
