So, I'm usually apt enough with computers. But right now I'm a big old pack of failure.

I'm just looking to cut down an mp3 and be able to save that portion as it's own thing for sampling. Likely to just use an iPod to play it, so it doesn't have to be fancy.

What software do you recommend?

personally i love Cakewalk's Sonar for pretty much everything audio

for your uses audacity or sound forge maybe

You can download wavepad free from download.com it will work for what you need and isn't as complicated as sonar
