I haven't bought heating oil this winter.

I just use my heated matress pad and tough it out.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 15,2008 9:54am

I'm going to buy some wood pellets in an hour, but they are for our puppy to poop on.

I have propane. When i moved into my house, err sorry my "parents" house we had a half a tank, Almost a year later I just had to fill it and I will get about 18months or more out of it. 1200$ for 490 gallons. Propane is the most efficient source of heating I have ever used Oil and Natty Gas sucks. My old house, err my "parents" old house had natural gas and it cost me almost 700$ a month and that's with the thermostat set to 68 at the most. Never again!

toggletoggle post by adamtimenli at Mar 15,2008 11:30am

Natty Gas

that made me crack dafuck up

i would tuff it out if i didnt have a 4 month old baby to keep warm. plus the landlord here did a shit job putting in new windows and they're wicked drafty. plus the house is over 100 years old and drafty. the T-stat doesnt go above 65, its not bad. long sleeves and socks take care of bidness

toggletoggle post by BOBDEAD at Mar 15,2008 12:59pm
I'm right with you on this homies...I've been milking 100 gallons since the start of winter...basically freezing my dick off...running the gas stove for heat and hiding in my room with a space heater. I use the oil mostly for showers or when I can't take it anymore. Fuckin BLOWS.

No the house was really old, one part of the house had just a crawlspace, another addition had a brick foundation, and the newest addition had a "proper" basement but the rest of the house had shitty insulation. The damn thing started out life as a gas station on the ORIGINAL 44 through Lakeville. the house sucked but I had 5 acres, err sorry my "parents" had 5 acres.

what's with all the "parents" references? is that where your house was built, on their land? if so, good for you. My folks are selling their place soon, i doubt i'll get anything, they've bailed me out enough over the years

you are comparing apples to oranges unless you converted it.
http://www.exeloncorp.com/peco/html/propane.htm

The difference between propane, or liquid petroleum gas (LPG), and natural gas comes down to their portability, compression, energy efficiency, and cost. However, there is generally no difference when it comes to performance in appliances for heating, cooking, or drying. The mixture of natural gas is comprised of propane, along with other gases like methane, butane, ethane, and pentane.

Propane provides more energy per unit volume than does natural gas. Heat is measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units. Propane provides about 2500 BTUs for the same volume of natural gas that only gives 1000 BTUs. However, natural gas can be less expensive at up to one-sixth the cost of propane, depending on where you live. Utilities in colder climates might supply natural gas for less money, especially during winter months. Some rural areas don't have access to a utility company that provides gas service.

my friend at work bitches about propane every single day at work and how much it costs or the % of his tank he used that week.

toggletoggle post by Godlessrobnli at Mar 15,2008 1:53pm
The parent reference was from and earlier post, where I posted pics of my house and ouchdrummer came on and said that I was bullshitting everyone and that I should admit it was my parents house because metalheads don't really do that well for themselves. Just a friendly jab.
Rev, Does your friend have an older house? Mine was built in 06' and really what it boils down to is how efficient the insulation and the appliances are.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 15,2008 1:58pm
built in 08.
he struts around the place like a fat cat when he uses 7% of his tank in a week. then the next week he will use 11% and com in like the saddest sack.

toggletoggle post by Godlessrobnli at Mar 15,2008 2:22pm
Holy shit 11% in a week? I use that in 2 or 3 months. Fucking dumbass must have his heat cranked to 90degrees 24 hours a day. How big is the house. That probably has something to do with it also. I have 2400sqf. anything bigger than that he deserves the misery of paying out the ass for propane

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 15,2008 2:26pm
or how big their tank is.
apples to oranges.
they are also from Vietnam so they keep it at something absurd like 80.

toggletoggle post by Godlessrobnli at Mar 15,2008 2:37pm
80, damn the most I have mine ever set to is 68. When the womenz start bitching about it being to cold, I tell em to quit whinning and go get a job and pay for the heat, until then put on a sweatshirt!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 15,2008 2:41pm
65 here, but I think carina/her family set it higher cause it's been 70ish.
when it's cold, I put wood in the gas/wood fireplace. I grew up with only wood stoves so it brings me back.

STOP USING OIL.

everything we have in modern society is a bi-product of oil consumption.

if we don't cut it, we're in for trouble after we blow past peak oil.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Mar 15,2008 3:19pm
I got electric heat. I bought an entire new heat/AC unit that was energystar rated. My biggest bill this winter was $190. I keep it at 76 when I'm home, 72 when I'm out.

Of course, I only have 800-1000 square feet.

I will heat my home with my own sense of self satisfaction.

I've got a natural gas heater in my room which is set at no more than 60 when I actually have it on (which is rare). Yea, I freeze - but - I have a ball bag and a few extra blankets so I am fine.

toggletoggle post by SkinSandwich at Mar 15,2008 9:28pm
$500 a month for a 3 bedroom house for me. I pay utilities, but they are cheap enough, yay!! Not bad for the Cape. Full basement as well, someone rent it out or something. The neighbors aren't cacks either so that helps.
