The older female I work with can't get enough. She's always listening to big band.

Yes. I like it. And I like burlesque from that time as well.

hell yeah! My grandfather was in a jazz band (that did big band music among other styles) for 60+ years!

Can't say I know specific bands or artists, but love that stuff!

toggletoggle post by aril at Nov 4,2009 5:45pm
My grandfather was too

Aril is Wren's brother from another grandmother.

kids back in high school used to have a band that played this stuff. Zippy and Donut Fillers i believe they were called. it was pretty groovy.

if you like it from the 30s and 40s then check out every louis armstrong record you can get because it's all great. also, benny goodman, glen miller. the latter two always seemed a little square to me, but "take the A train" and "in the mood" are the most famous big band tunes ever basically... so what do i know.
if you just want good big band music, check duke ellington, gene krupa, buddy rich, maynard ferguson, charles mingus, and charlie haden's orchestra. also the arrangements on miles davis' porgy and bess are cool big band charts... less like gershwin's musical, more like evil "kind of blue".
john coltrane also had an improv big band on his album ascencion. smoke a j, sit with headphones on and listen to the whole thing. changed my life.

Tommy Dorsey is another. I just ordered "The best of Big band"
Good times. Thanks for the suggestions t2daeeknli.

i was just thinking about this the other day and how much i enjoy it. at Union Station in Worcester there is a new restaurant called Luciano's Cotton Club and they play all 30's and 40's big band stuff, its great.

good fucking thread.

my grandfather has a walk-in closet with literally thousands of big band records, tapes...all meticulously organized and in mint condition. his hearing is almost gone, i dread the day that happens to me.

by the way: free, legal, public domain jazz downloads:

Public Domain meaning they're from the 1940's and before... so it's the gooooooooooodness.
