I once owned a Venue/Bar. I made a lot of money in the 90s and early 2000s. Around 2004 my business hit rock bottom because of a lot of new issues and violation due to the station night club fire and new American policies regarding venues. I used to have the cash to bring in awesome bands to my place of business and I was able to pay them a good amount for their entertainment. What happened was more venues closed because they couldn't afford the changes that were required. Anyway long story short my bar had to close it doors in 05. People who support illegal shows in warehouses dont realize they take away from a real venue and make it so we all have to close. They have illegal shows in places that are totally against code yet still charge and sell/trade and byob so there is no need for real club anymore and we are all going under. So you can have your illegal venues but when you realize it only kills business and makes it so that way you can only play illegal shows and not have any cash flowing and it is killing what was once cool. So fuck you hipsters, oh wait you dont care about making money because you have daddies money to forward too instead.

There is one part of that post I can agree with... as long as there's solid DIY spaces for shows, there is no need for a legit venue.

Shut up faggot.

Dear Legit Venue Owner,

Not everybody wants to pay $500 to rent a space for a venue. Not everyone wants to sit around until their 21st birthday for the right to listen to music. Not every touring band has time to wait for Metal Thursday or figure out which cool dude promoter they need to kiss ass to so they can play with Goatwhore.

As long as there has been music there have been basement/warehouse/DIY anywhere shows. If your bar went out of business its because you're a shitty business man.

The best period of music I ever experienced in New England was the JustAnotherScene era. People booked DIY shows on a nightly basis. 17 year old kids coaxed VFW halls into booking amazing shows and paid the police detail blood money with their allowance. DIY venues where everywhere. Basement shows were everywhere. Touring bands always stopped here because there was always a place to play and there was always something going on. If some butthead promoter was throwing a temper tantrum then you said fuck him, and booked your own show. We got to see awesome bands consistently because of it. And you know what? The big venues still flourished. The Palladium made bank. The Middle East made bank. The Met made bank. Lupos made bank.

So boo hoo if you and your $9 budweisers went bankrupt. Grimey illegal shows for fucking ever.

Lupos did not make bank. You should see the insurance claims they have to pay....

The big deal with this is how expensive it is to have a liquor license, and how hard it is to avoid claims when there's rowdy metal/hardcore fans. Insurance is fucking expensive, and DIY shows are way cheaper to put on, book, worry about, etc.

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Jan 19,2012 10:40am
I'm not the Lupos accountant. My claim was speculative based on the fact that they still booked shows all the time with huge turnouts in that period.

toggletoggle post by eyeroller at Jan 19,2012 10:58am
I put a lot of blame on lawyers and the overly litigious US community for suing the fucking Christ out of anyone and everyone for anything and nothing. I remember insurance rates going way up in the early 90s after stagediving became old hat and every 98-pound bespectacled pissant started doing it, breaking their own pencilnecks, then suing the clubs for not preventing them from doing it. Dozens of companies paid out over 100 million fucking dollars (look it up!) after the Station fire, even companies that had nothing to do with the fire, including a *number* of insulation companies (though only one company made the insulation in that place, it was never proven whose soundproofing insulation was used so they ALL paid out astronomical settlements rather than lose even more in court/lawyer costs), and even the fucking beer distributor. It was a feeding frenzy for the SHARKS who smelled blood in the water - How much of that actually went to families? Long-term effect is, insurance rates are sky-high. That being said, gimme a good warehouse show any day. I'm more than happy to frequent a bar that has a show I actually want to see, so book something that's not jangly collegiate crap, wigger bullshit or cookie-cutter death metal - Getting feet through the door is what'll pay your insurance rapes, I mean rates. At least people can smoke at warehouse shows, I'd rather smell smoke than sweaty fatsos, thanks. Ok, off the soapbox.

wait, Lupos had to pay claims? Lupos was a successful insurance company?

Claims against Lupo', rather. And yes, court is rough when idiots stage dive then sue.
