Boston police clamp down on slam dancing

Add slam dancing to activities banned in Boston.

Police recently cited a city club for allowing violent mosh pit dancing and vowed a crackdown on what they called "dangerous behavior" and a "public safety hazard."

The Boston Herald (http://bit.ly/wNguyU) reports that police cited the House of Blues for a license violation because of a mosh pit that broke out during a Feb. 21 show by Flogging Molly.

Police say 60 concertgoers engaged in the violent dance.

Police say the dance violated safety rules and the club was cited because security did not intervene. The club has agreed to put up signs that says mosh pits are banned.

Brian Fair, vocalist for Boston band Shadows Fall, called the clampdown "ridiculous." Musicians say slam dancing is part of the metal and hardcore culture.

Flogging Molly at the HOB. That must have been quite the violent pit.

Right? The average person at that show had probably never even seen a pit before. Someone probably freaked out and thought there was a riot going on and called the cops. There is no real crackdown.

What an outrageous thing to do. Please list the addresses of all the "underground" heavy metal basements so that I may go and dance all slam-like without the keen eye of the police to watch me.
Also, please post the names of the owners of these houses so I can give them to my friend Francis Billiam Ianelli. He wants to come too.

dropkick murphy's is there this week.. I wonder if they will clamp down on the bro pit.

I did security at a dropkicks show, had to tell someone's old dad to stop dancing on a bar stool. Good thing he wasn't "slam dancing"

hahaha "slam dancing". isn't a "mosh at your own risk" sign enough?

I used to goto shows on Lansdowne in high school where guys on steroids would grab you by the collar and punch you in the face until you dropped or or their hands got sore from punching you. And everyone older than me always said the Rat was even worse.

But by all means, let's call the National Guard to hose down some jocks making out during Flogging Molly (lol).

LOLOLOL. How did I miss the best part? Can't wait for the Shadows Fall testimony at the Senate committee on slam dancing hearing.

I pictured this scenario in my head and it gave me some lulz.

I think my head would explode if I had to sit through an entire Dropkick Muphys set. Not sure if I hate the band or their fans more.

I thought they were fined for having Flogging Molly on the premises

I dunno about that. Landsdowne St would mess with you if you tried to stagedive, but I never saw any pits get fucked with. And the RAT??? Really???? Thats going back to when I was young enough to still give a shit about pits. I remember coming home from Gang Green and Napalm Death shows (and others I cant remember right now) covered in bruises and spilled Rat Brew from slamming my ass off. No one ever tried to stop any moshing at the Rat that I ever saw.
The only time I ever got yelled at at the Rat was when I lit a joint inside. I had just moved here from NYC and in NY thats an ok thing to do (or at least it was back then)

I think he's talking about showgoers, not security.

Allow me to clarify. 90's me frequented 90's toughguy hardcore shows. These aforementioned steroid aficionados weren't security guards.

My dad likes to tell a story about how he got hit with a cudgel in some brawl at the Rat in the 70s

I think he was there to see The Cars lol

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Mar 13,2012 11:35am
well, ok then.
I was in AC. I got a pass from the steroids guys and nazis and bikers.

I went to more Babyhead shows than Boston shows back then, but there was definitely a strong "monogrammed mouthguard, constant Mortal Kombat spinkick to the mouth" vibe going on at most of those shows as well.

I'll always remember Madball/Reason Enough/Blood for Blood at the Rat. Got a separated rib from a flying Fat Pat, which was a mild bummer, but I really couldn't complain. Big Dan got his goddamn eyeball popped out during BFB. Made it back from the hospital for Madball. WTF.

I remember at Babyhead (or maybe it was still the Rocket) that a few too many people got hurt, so they banned Doc Martens, hahaha, it was hilarious seeing all the skinheads switch over to Adidas Sambas, the other acceptable skinhead footwear.
