New site? Maybe some day.
|
Ok folks, serious discussion here.
Someone mentioned that most of the people on here are old metal heads who've been around for a long time. It got me self conscious about my increasing grey hairs, the world, and the local scene.
This site was an essential glue of the metal and hardcore scenes for a long time. All shows were found out through here. Bands met members through here. People bought/sold/traded gear through here.
And then at the end of every show everyone would come on here to shit talk each other.
And the random band name generator. What glory.
But now to find shows and discuss them before and after people seem to use Facebook event pages primarily. The pictures are on both Facebook and Instagram. I am not sure where other people meet band mates or trade gear these days.
But Facebook has taken a lot of the market away from here.
So when did this happen? 2010? 2012? I feel like it was sometime around then when I started using Facebook event pages to find out about shows regularly. Possibly earlier.
How has this changed the scene?
What can we do about it?

facebook is currently down. |

I would say 2012-2013 was where I noticed that everything just went to fb. It sucks for me since I still use this site for a bunch of things. Now, everyone has cameras in their pockets, a forum in their pockets, and that's how we live. |
|
When I'm doing my radio show, I have to check FB, FB Pages, email, messenger, text, wunh text, and RTTP constantly to get requests. I always seem to miss something for too long. |
|
The reason I keep posting is cus I keep hoping that it might jump start the good ol' days. Also it's fun to annoy people. |

I have done more on the code of this site in the past month than the past 3-4 years. |
|
I need to work the spam filtering into the text site. I also might try to do some adsense again or something. The site also needs a new server since the current server is on a limping hard drive. |
|
i don't have facebook so this is all i have except for when people tell me about stuff coming up/when i look at venue sites. isn't facebook oversaturated with a bunch of groups of people having back-patting orgies about how amaaaazing every single local band is now? |

You guys should listen to metal podcasts instead. |

FB didn't have to try very hard. At the time FB users were getting used to using things that would replace RTTP threads, like Event pages and FB groups, the number of annoying anon trolls on RTTP was exponentially increasing.
Aaron's arbitrarily-principled refusal to require logins made it all too easy for everyone to make the decision to migrate away from here onto FB. |
|
What about Grandmaweb? Can we get her in on this? |
|
Can Sonic Pulse get on this? |
|
Thunderstool marked the death of Rttp and eventually himself. |

inb4 DR posts the inevitable misspelled technophobic rant about the Zucc |

I find is hilarious how many times a week, I see "Returntothepit.com is still a thing?" |

Not all anonymous trolls were annoying.
New England Metalheads needed their safe spaces so they went to Facebook.
People were afraid to post here because they'd get ripped to shreds.
Now they have their little group of friends who feed their egos with their online posting.
Anonymous posters drove this forum and made it fun. It was not always fun but it was fun. |

I had to stop promoting shows here sometime in 2012, I think, because WilyStool's constant rape and death threats made the board unusable.
|
|
I think Facebook is coming to a natural end. It kinda sucks especially for music stuff. Don't know what will replace it but it'll make some openings for sites like this again maybe. |
|
I don't think facebook is really going anywhere without some sort of disruption to it at the same game. They are a young and adaptable company with 1/2 trillion market cap. At this point, they can just buy the next big thing. |

Probs some 12 year old middle schooler that just found out about agnostic front for the first time dreaming of the good old days before kids were raised on IPads. |
|
This board is at it's best because I post here.
Also Gmommyweb should post more flattering pics.
You look sorta fat in that picture and I know you're KNOT. |
|
does the disapproving expression on my face make me look fat?
there's plenty of other pictures of me on this forum. |
|
hm.. did I break the spam stuff? |
|
huh, no that worked. Weird. Some are slipping through and I'm not getting the emails. |

Is the Metal Scene in general dying?
I feel like we've been saying that forever. People are always saying the scene is dying. Whenever there is a resurgence the new members are called posers for a while till most of them leave and the few that remain get accepted till the next one.
But are young people not into it anymore?
Like the metal scene is mostly cis straight white dudes and from what I can tell in the youth that is the least cool thing you can be these days. |

You're right. During the time when the majority of postings were by known users, those anons that were present were more likely to be funny than not. There was a window of time where registered posters and anons coexisted with a reasonably fair balance. At some point - around 2014, although you might put it earlier - the see saw tipped hard and there was no way to tilt it back.
I wouldn't say they 'drove' the forum but it was definitely possible for them to legitimately add to the amusement for a while. Now it's the only game in town. |

Who cares, nobody does but that guy who posts that nobody cares.
I think that persons cock is very small.
I wonder what it is like to have a small cock. |
|
Nobody here even knows who the fuck that is. Why are you so infatuated with him? |

She just intimated that she knows the size of his penis, so... It's something she is interested in and thinks about. |

hardly. but he talks about it incessantly, and writes blogs about his sexual fantasies involving underage children. |
