go to best buy on black friday. decent HP one for cheap. plus they are giving free upgrades of vista to all vista ready computers when vista is released.

toggletoggle post by Mess at Nov 18,2006 9:11am
is that every friday or something?

that Centrino M is the same computer that I'm using right now and I carina bought this for me nov 2004 for $750. that laptop you linked would be a good deal for $399.

I would suggest paying about $699 and getting a good laptop from dell. this dell I'm using right now is the computer I've been using for EVERYTHING and it's been fine (granted I was a faster one now). go to http://www.dell.com and build a lattitude and then just wait for a deal.

$499 for a dell with similar specs

better processor if I rememeber

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Nov 18,2006 10:10am

Don't.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 18,2006 10:38am
there is no reason to get a MAC now. they dummifier their hardware to use any crap. Get a $2300 pc lappy instead of the Mac and you can do anything with linux running elightenment and wine or windows and cigwin or something.
Mac's USED TO kick ass with the whole faster memory channels and stuff like that, but now it doesn't matter. anything that Macs do, PCs are just as good at.

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Nov 18,2006 10:39am
thanks for the advice Rev

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 18,2006 10:39am
To Mess, you can buy a dell coupon on ebay too. around this time of the year, dell typically has 50% off laptop coupons.. but I didn't see them yet so they might not be doing it this year.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?s...v=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 18,2006 10:44am
oh if you look at the Dell prices, you see one that is crossed out, that's the price the the 20% coupon comes off of.
so if you look here
http://www.dell.com/content/products/categ...ry.aspx/inspn?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

you see
$549
$449
when you apply the coupon it's off the $549. since the $449 is already 19% off the $549, then buy the coupon from dell does nothing for you.

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Nov 18,2006 10:47am
does this mean it's got 2 cd/dvd drives?

8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

that would be a plus so i could copy my cd's or whatever to another disc without having to rip the cd and then burn it.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 18,2006 10:48am
I want a new laptop for my photo-stuff, but I want a duo core 2 with a SATAII drive. that's not going to happen now. I don't think it would make my picture processing better/faster enough to merrit it.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 18,2006 10:49am
no. that means you get one drive that does it all. I have one that does all that, but DL (dual-layer) DVD-R too. I don't have any DL DVDs yet... yet.. they are 8GB per disc.

i hate people seriously this is going to suck but it will probably be worth it if i can actually get one? if i don't get one and i was standing in line for that long (be prepared to see some asshole "me" on the news). i just won't go to bed. i'm trying to find a best buy out in the sticks somewhere where there is less people but... no such luck.

that's what carina and I did for the passed couple years at staples. but then they moved the staples with everything else.

how long would you wait in line?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 20,2006 10:22am
I wouldn't, but that's just me.
sometimes (especially with best buy) they will pass out tickets for what you want to buy.

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Nov 20,2006 10:24am
tickets? what do the tickets do?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 20,2006 10:28am

I guess I'm partial to them because we've always had them at my house so it's what I'm used to. My foster dad is some sort of Mac advocate so I've heard a lot of praise.

Also, I've heard (from many different sources) that Dell laptops generally suck. Has something changed or...?

I've had a Dell Inspiron for almost 5 years now. I've replaced hard drive, power cord and modem and the battery is totally dead, but the fucker still works pretty well. From what I hear, Dells have improved a lot, however they have the worst customer service ever. Don't count on talking to ANYONE who speaks English.

And get the extended warrenty.

And Dell laptops are atrocious. I watch people at work cause more headaches for themselves because of their cheap Dell laptops than anything else. When I was shopping around for computers 2 years ago everyone was trying to push Dell laptops on me because they were so cheap. If I'm gonna skimp on anything it's gonna be condoms because I'd rather have AIDS than lug my computer down to Best Buy every other month to get it fixed.

if you want to get a black friday deal on a laptop...know that quantities are VERY limited... know of people going to wait in line after eating thanksgiving dinner...it used to be bad when people got in line at midnight....but now it's the day before....give me a break!

what also sucks is that certain store managers hand out the tickets whenever they want...if they have a lot of people the day before, they'll just hand them out and then if you go at midnight you have no idea that everything's spoken for...aaron and i have been lucky so far...the best deal so far being $500 bucks for the TV in our bedroom that i see people still buying it when it goes on sale for $799 now... haha

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 22,2006 7:50am
buying from ebay with nothing for a warrenty is stupid. I'm not saying my first lappy had questionalbe origins (or if the words "grabbed through window" came up), but you'd be better off buying you laptop froma dark alley in brockton than ebay.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 22,2006 8:19am
the reverend's guide to laptop brands:

macs: amazingly reliable machines built on slightly older hardware than current PCs with an OS that runs faster than windows on the older hardware, but costs 2 to 4x the price. Oh and none of the software you have bought in your life will work on it.

Dells: cheap and take a beating. Stay away from PIII and PIV's. those were terrible.

Sony: 2x-4x the cost, but all the latest and greatest technology. Packed into a super light laptop. Down side is that they are delicate.

IBM (chinese): 2x the cost of dells, but take the most beating besides toughbooks.

panasonic: tough books. 2 year old technology, but a cop can spill coffee on the keyboard and they still work.

Toshiba: do they still make laptops? They were bulky boxes. Now they are HPs that try to pretend they are sonys.

HP/Compaq: bulky crap that breaks easily. But hell, for a $400 laptop meant for college freshmen girls, what do you expect?

Alienwares: 4x-6x the price, but you get the latest and greatest aimed at gamers.

note: I have owned /still own a toshiba, 2 dells, and an ibm.

the only thing you can really do that with is RAM and HD, but since you have to order these with RAM and a HD, if you replace them after the fact, you have the original RAM and Hard drive sitting around doing nothing. I loaded up a toshiba 14.1" WXGA+ tablet PC and then looked for RAM online.
$2180 with 2GB RAM
$1880 with 512MB RAM
and then I found 2x1GB for $195
so I would save a little there...

anonymousteinberg said:

because the desktop is downstairs as a file server/media PC and is hooked up to the big TV. Plus, even with a new power supply, it will continue to over heat like it has been for the past year. I had to reboot it all the time cause something wound just go wrong.

The MAC upstairs is connected to the TV upstairs and is used as a freeBSD unix box and a DVD player. I guess you are too stupid to have need of a unix box. oh wait, didn't you once say something about the merrits of freeBSD in a thread some where? hm.. what are MAC's OSX written on... hm.. you obviously must crave cock a lot. I would talk to you face to face, but man.. the smell of cock would probably be too much for me to stomach.

carina just ordered a new lappy from dell. the thing will be an awesome monster!

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Dec 8,2006 8:01am
which one?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 8,2006 8:06am
I believe it's the dell 1705.
17" screen and all the wizzies that will make it a super faster/nice machine for her photo-editing.

17" screen. jeeeeesh. sounds like a tank.
will it be more for home use than anything er what?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 8,2006 8:22am
exactly. I read some things where someone moved from the computers that her/i have now to something like that and processing one picture used to take them 3 1/2 minutes per picture, but once they got a computer spec'd like what she ordered, it dropped to 50 seconds.

i'm still looking. my car's in the shop so i suppose being able to drive come's before the fun stuff.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 8,2006 8:31am
if you don't have a car, then you can't go anywhere.
therefore, you don't need a laptop.

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Dec 8,2006 8:42am
but if i find one cheap enough, i'll thow it on the plastic and get myself in more debt and go nowhere in life. sounds like a plan to me.

Hey Rev, are Acer laptops any good?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 11,2006 1:03am
they are ok as far as cheap laptops go

toggletoggle post by davefromthegrave  at Dec 11,2006 1:05am
Do they have any consistent problems or anything like that?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Dec 11,2006 1:06am
not any more than any other $400 laptop.

toggletoggle post by davefromthegrave  at Dec 11,2006 1:15am
i should probably go with a dell. i can't stand when shit breaks on me.

toggletoggle post by davefromthegrave  at Dec 11,2006 1:16am

Go with Dell.com There is a trick to it though. Find the laptop that suits you online, but don't order it online. Call the 800 number and tell them the model # that you saw online...phone orders are typically cheaper with Dell than buying online. I think it's because the sales person makes a commission. I saw a moniter online, but when I called in to order is was $100 cheaper! Try it... pick the laptop out online, but call to order it.
